Meet Dempsey. He HAD leukemia.

Our youngest son, Dempsey, was diagnosed on April 3, 2016 with Pre-B Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Talk about a kick in the gut. I was in shock for the better part of a month. Yes, I was still functional but not in the ways I wished I was. Welcome to being human, eh?

Here are some stats about childhood leukemia:
  • Only 4% of U.S. federal funding is solely dedicated to childhood cancer research. That's to cover ALL TYPES of childhood cancer.
  • More children are lost to cancer in the U.S. than any other disease—in fact, more than many other childhood diseases combined.
  • Before they turn 20, about 1 in 285 children in the U.S. will have cancer.
  • Worldwide, a child is diagnosed every 2 minutes.
  • About 3 out of 4 leukemias among children and teens are acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). Most of the remaining cases are acute myelogenous leukemia (AML).
  • The 5-year survival rate for children with ALL has greatly increased over time and is now more than 85% overall.
  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia is responsible for about 1,400 deaths a year in the U.S., and it can progress quickly if untreated. However, ALL is one of the most curable cancers and survival rates are now at an all-time high.
  • About 98 percent of children with ALL go into remission within weeks after starting treatment. About 90 percent of those children can be cured. Patients are considered cured after 5 years in remission.
**Dempsey will be 13 when he hears the word "cured".
**These stats are provided by St Baldricks and Cancer.org.

Why we do what we do:
To protect our baby from the horrible effects of chemotherapy. Click HERE to get a glimpse of the vast array of negative side effects (all claimed as  "expected" and "normal") his prescribed drugs could cause.
Then remember this:
He hasn't had one negative side effect!
